Surfing on Socotra

SOCOTRA - For those in the know, Yemen is listed as one of the most dangerous places in the world to surf. For Josh, Charlie and Nate, three professional surfers writing for Surfing Magazine, it's time to dispel the myth. The trio from Southern California recently took a privately sponsored tour of the beaches of Socotra and the Gulf of Aden, wrapping up their month-long trip with a yacht cruise on the Red Sea. The trip was timed to coincide with the summer monsoon winds, which were anticipated to generate the best waves. "It was pretty wicked on Socotra," said Josh. "There were some big waves out there." The group spent two weeks on the virtually un-surfed island, followed by one week traveling from beach to beach all the way to Al-Ghaydah in the southwest corner of Yemen and then a week on the Red Sea. "There were, like, awesome places to surf all the way to Oman," said Nate. "Bir Ali was super cool." & "Not everyone's looking for a big beach resort where they can surf," said Charlie. "There's a lot of Zen Surfers out there, you know, kind of like, become one with their surfboard, and for them, Socotra's perfect." Despite some discomfort ("You couldn't get away from the wind," said Josh) and the hazard of being hundreds of miles from medical facilities, the trio left with a very favorable impression of Yemen. Their write-up on the trip is due to appear in November.
