Nelson works best on Northerly sea-breezes, which are on-shore to the main beach, but cross shore to the tidal channel at Tahnunanui that allows kiting in as little as 8 knots of wind.
Kiting at Tahunanui Beach is only permitted at the far end of the beach, away from the patrolled swimming areas. There is plenty of car-parking and lots of grass and sand to rig up in. Riding in the channel is not suitable for beginners due to the fast current, but the main front beach area is fine for all abilities. This is a great spot for free-style riding. Other spots within 30mins drive worth checking out include Atawhai Inlet, Rabbit Island, Ruby Bay and Marahau.
